Have you considered what it is that a sheep herder or shepherd does?  His responsibilities include leading sheep to pastures and fending off predators. He also goes after those in danger because they have wandered off or they are beginning to wander.  Peter uses this imagery to detail the work of Christ.

First he speaks of the drastic measure Christ has taken to rescue straying sheep.  He writes, “…He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned…” (1 Pt. 2:24b-25a, NASU).  Jesus was willing sacrifice Himself to bring lost sheep back.

Second, He says, “…but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.”(1 Pt. 2:25b, NASU).  Jesus is currently the “shepherd” and “guardian” of our souls.  As a shepherd observes a sheep begin to wander away, he takes steps to bring that sheep back into the fold.  He points the right direction to take and points out the dangerous path. In so doing, He is a guardian of the soul.

Just as Jesus is our Shepherd, dads have a responsibility to direct the sheep of their families.  Dad guides the family in the way it should go, and helps fend off would be predators.  Next Wednesday, September 5th, at 7 PM, the Men’s Ministry class on Wednesdays will begin a study “Being Family Shepherds.”  All men are invited to participate and are encouraged to invite their friends.  See you there.
