It was a special holiday. There had been hundreds of Feasts of Weeks in the past. But for the Jews gathered in Jerusalem this Feast of Weeks or "Pentecost" would be different. Some 50 days earlier a man named Jesus had been crucified by the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate at the insistence of the Jewish leaders. Jesus died. He was buried, but was raised alive from the tomb.

Now the crowds were gathered from all over the Roman empire to celebrate the Pentecost. Something amazing happened however. Jesus' closest followers, known also as Apostles (or ones sent) began proclaiming Jesus' resurrection. The amazing thing was that these twelve men were able to preach in languages they had never studied or known previously. To some in the crowds the languages sound like drunken speech, but the crowds could understand the sermons in their own languages. Peter, one of the Apostles, declared to those who argued it was drunken speech:

"..."Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. 15 "For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; 16 but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel..." (Acts 2:14-16, NASU)

Peter continues his sermon describing the works of God done by Jesus that were witnessed by the residents of Jerusalem. He claims Jesus is the Messiah and calls the audience to repentance and to be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. We read, "So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. 42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" (Acts 2:41-40, NASU).

This was the beginning of the church. These new disciples of Jesus Christ would later be called Christians (Acts 11:26). The church spread throughout Judea, the Roman world, and today in nearly every country and people group.

In Benbrook, Texas a new church of Christians began meeting for worship on May 17th. The Christians which started this church did so wanting share the good news of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection with their new neighbors in Benbrook and the surrounding area

We are excited to start this new work. We are a diverse group of Christians representing various walks of life and backgrounds. Some among this new church are young families while others are empty-nesters. Some are new Christians themselves, others are longtime disciples. But all have one thing in common - a love for Jesus. Each one has a desire to share Jesus with others.

If you are someone who is wanting to know more about Jesus or Christianity, we would love to have you as our guest in worship. We are friendly and easy to talk with. You will feel acceptance and love as you search to understand the Bible, God and Jesus.
